***New program, will take on several new clients for free***
This program is a hybrid between traditional life coaching and a course on understanding yourself through the lens of evolutionary psychology and eastern philosophy. The format will be hour long sessions via telephone, one per week for four weeks. Each session will have an instructional component as well as a coaching component where we will apply the principles to the specifics of your life and the changes you are looking to make.
I have been trained as a life coach through an ICF accredited school and have been coaching for the past two years. I have long used the principles of evolutionary psychology and eastern philosophy in my coaching, however have only recently began to develop this course/coaching hybrid model which has a more formalized teaching component. I am offering the program for free to a handful of participants in exchange for feedback. To learn more about me and my practice, visit confidentrobot.com
For those not familiar with evolutionary psychology, it is a discipline that looks at the human brain in terms of the environment in which it slowly evolved, that of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. In this view, our brains are not so much general purpose problem solving machines, but instead are comprised of many specific systems designed to help us thrive within this particular environment. These systems have a large impact on our emotions, behavioral tendencies, and even the way we are inclined to think about things. We run into many problems today because the modern environment is vastly different than the one which we were designed to operate within. Evolutionary psychology provides a powerful lens to help us understand why we are the way we are and why we experience many of the problems that we do.
One of the big take-homes from our application of evolutionary psychology is that we are much more driven by subconscious processes than we intuitively appreciate. What we are conscious of is only the tip of the iceberg. We come from the factory filled with drives, instincts, emotions, and tendencies of thought that push us in certain directions and have a huge influence on the decisions we make, actions we take, and the way our lives unfold. By understanding a little about how we are wired up, we are better able to identify why we get stuck and where to push in order to get ourselves moving. By looking at what’s going on under the hood, we can learn to move with ourselves in a way that flows.
Our use of eastern philosophy provides us with tools that serve as actionable counterparts to the insights provided by evolutionary psychology. We will not address the religious or mystical aspects of these eastern traditions, but instead will focus on the secular and practical aspects as they apply to modern psychology, with a particular emphasis on mindfulness. The first thing that many of us think about when we hear mindfulness is meditation. Though we will discuss the benefits of meditation, this is not a necessary component of the method. Mindfulness, as it is applied here, relates to the way in which we move through our day to day activities and how we interact with our own thoughts and feelings. We will use it as a tool to help break free from internal conflicts: areas where a part of us wants to make a change, but yet we always seem to get in our own way when we try to make it happen.
For those not familiar with life coaching, think of this as a collaborative process where we will strategize together to help you achieve your goals, overcome obstacles, and/or clarify your thoughts and priorities.
Below are some life coaching areas in which I have experience:
Shyness and Social Anxiety
Overcoming Fear to Take Bold Action
Though this list covers the various areas in which I have worked, our area of focus need not be limited to the above. We can focus on any goal or issue that might be on your mind.
Participants in this course should be open to the notion of evolution via natural selection (so not ideal for creationists), as well as have an area of their life that they would like to explore in a coaching environment. Participation limited to individuals 18 years of age and older.
Please contact me with any questions that you may have.
