Vincent Bach, Mt. Vernon NY "Stradivarius" Bb Pro Cornet, Built 1960
Medium Bore, .450"
Please read the entire description below!
Greetings! I offer this B-flat cornet marked "Stradivarius / Model / Vincent Bach / Corporation / Mt. Vernon / New York, U.S.A." on the bell throat. Serial number 20372 indicates production in 1960. The bell model is not indicated so I assume it is a 37 bell. No bore designator on valve block; bore measures .450" (medium bore) at the 2nd slide. Construction is all yellow brass, with replacement clear lacquer finish. I am selling it on consignment. This instrument was owned and played by Central New York trad jazz icon Dick Ames, longtime leader of The Bearcat Jass Band, with which I played for well over a decade. Dick was a veritable compendium of early jazz history, and auditing his Syracuse University course on traditional jazz was a revelation for me. Rest assured that you are not only buying a classic Mt. Vernon Bach cornet, you will own a piece of Central New York jazz history.
CONDITION: Cosmetically good. This instrument was heavily played, and it was overhauled many years ago. I'm not sure who did the overhaul and relacquer, but I expect it was Allied Supply Co. The replacement lacquer is about 80% intact, with losses in the touch areas and areas that show repairs. The 3rd-slide throw has its original stop nuts. I see no red-rot anywhere. The pistons are moderately tight with good action and mild-to moderate blow-by. The 3rd-slide throw is short and rather stiff so it may need lapping and adjustment. The bell flare shows slight ripples and scarring from dent repair. There are a few small dings here and there. The bell bow and throat also show signs of dent repair. The instrument is sold AS-IS with no warranties. See pictures. WYSIWYG.
PLAYING QUALITIES: It plays very well with a warm cornet tone. In spite of the M bore it blows quite freely and easily. I'd have no issue whatsoever with taking it on one of my gigs, in fact I'd be quite pleased to, and I'd probably buy it myself if I had the dough. NOTE that I make no representations made about its suitability for your intended use.
ACCESSORIES: Original Mt. Vernon Bach case with correct badge outside but missing inside badge. Benge 7C mouthpiece. See pictures; WYSIWYG.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE: This Mt. Vernon Bach Strad cornet was owned and played by an upstate NY jazz ICON, Dick Ames. It is a classic, collectible pro horn which should appeal to a collector, recreational player, or professional. It is sold AS-IS. All sales FINAL unless I determine that I significantly misrepresented it. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the instrument itself. Thanks for looking!
SHIPPING: Local pickup preferred, cash, in person. Insured shipping WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL US ONLY via UPS will be $50, with payment by PayPal Goods & Services only. Located in Syracuse NY.
ATTENTION SCAMMERS: I DO NOT reply to "Is this still available?" If the post is up, it's available. I've seen it all. NO bank drafts; NO "agents"; NO meeting you at some parking lot; NO text messages; NO blind gee mail addresses. I may have been born at night, but not LAST NIGHT.
All you nice honest folks out there in Craigslistland, please contact me if you have an interest in this instrument. I'll be glad to email/text more pics and details. Thanks for looking!
