Greetings! I offer this antique valve trombone in Bb marked "F. Besson / Brevete / 198 Euston Dr. / London / C. Fischer / 6 4th av. N.Y. / Sole Agent U. States" on the bell throat. Serial number 29632 on the 2nd valve casing indicates production in about 1882. This instrument is in high pitch (approx. A=456) with sleeves to extend the slides to modern low pitch (A=440.) Construction is silverplated yellow brass. Receiver takes a standard-shank trombone mouthpiece.
CONDITION: Fair/good overall. The silverplate is about 90%+, with wear in some of the touch areas, and etching on the bell section from extensive tarnishing. There are small dings and dents scattered around the instrument. The main tuning slide bumper is pushed in a bit. The leadpipe was cracked and I have repaired it with a small raw brass sleeve. The valves have a moderate amount of blow-by. I have de-tarnished and polished it but it could use a thorough cleaning, which I will leave to the new owner. It will also need new valve felts and corks. The instrument is sold AS-IS with no warranties. See pictures. WYSIWYG.
PLAYING QUALITIES: It plays surprisingly well and I wouldn't be afraid to take it on a gig. NOTE that I make no representations made about its suitability for your intended use.
ACCESSORIES: None. No mouthpiece, case, or other accessories. See pictures; WYSIWYG.
PAYMENT: IN PERSON cash on pickup. I will accept PayPal Goods & Services for shipped orders, with a 4% additional charge.
SHIPPING: I will ship this within the lower 48 continental United States ONLY. Please provide your ZIP Code for a shipping quote. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE: This antique English Besson valve trombone would be an affordable horn for recreational player. It is sold AS-IS. All sales FINAL unless I determine that I significantly misrepresented it.
ATTENTION SCAMMERS: I've seen it all. NO bank drafts; NO "agents"; NO meeting you at some parking lot; NO text messages; NO blind gee mail addresses. I may have been born at night, but not LAST NIGHT.
All you nice honest folks out there in Craigslistland, please contact me if you have an interest in this instrument. I'll be glad to email/text more pics and details and to answer any questions about the instrument itself. Thanks for looking!
